  1. This guy is one of the most annoying toons in my opinion. I’ve tried using QGJ to stop his taunt, but every time ANYBODY on the enemy team goes below 50% royal guard will taunt. This means you HAVE to kill him first, and watch as the glass cannons destroy your team.

    • Imho, he is among the top 5 toons in the game, hands down. I currently only have him at 3*, but even at 1* he has helped my arena team remain top 3. Yep, top 3. Using him these past 2-3 weeks (I’m lvl 62) has almost everyone in my top 10 using him now! He sets the record in the speed meta as the fastest taunter in the game, thus the best protector for offensive, glass canon style play, and also on my A team for GW. Has my vote for #1 toon. Which is people why he is hardest character I have to gear up, no shield till lvl 65, that does hurt.. still 5*.

  2. I have Royal Guard at 4* and Gear Lvl 7.
Tough Health and Protection along with a very useful 80% chance stun (Lvl 5 Basic Attack) which occurs often. He is not good as your sole destroyer, due to his sub-par damage, but if you surround him with power players, he excels at stunning the opposite teams players. I usually find myself playing 5 vs 4 due to his stun ability. Worth the upgrading and time.

Interesting commentary ! Coincidentally , if someone has been looking for a VA 26-1852 , my colleague encountered a blank version here http://goo.gl/vm6rJJ

  4. I think this toon is pretty nice. Great stun with speed down, auto taunt is really bad because will make you crazy. The specialc ability is meh… Anyway since it’s really spammed in arena nowadays you should know that are some tricky toons who can kill high dps enemies without triggering the auto taunt. Basically every high damage dealer can. Best toons for that are: 1) Fener. Doesn’t matter how close the target’s health is to 50%, he’ll break it anyway. 2) Rey. Every ability can kill the target when he’s cloae to mid health if the attack is a critical, use the special moves and, unless the target dodges it, you’re done.3) Geonosian Soldier/QGJ/Ig-86. I would reccomend these ones only if they have the attack buff, then their double attack is fatal too when close to mid health. 4) Leila. This one is pretty easy to understand. Just bring the target’s health as close as possible to 50%, then simply use the base attack. 5) Phasma+Lando. Ok this might sound bad but think about it… Lando’s AoE with advantage given by Phasma will allow him to re-cast it stronger the next time. With his skill he gets crits probability up and then you keep spamming AoE. Unless he gets stunned or an ability block he can keep it up, taunting is useless this way.
I’m sure there are many other ways to avoid RG’s taunting, but here are some ideas, many of them tried by myself.

  5. Tun Rheos Iridium

I run an all ewok team with chirpa as lead, RG, E elder, teebo, and E scout. RG makes this work as he protects my others while they get in a ton of hits. Ewoks can Usually take out 1, maybe even 2 characters and stun one before the enemy gets to move in GW

I’ve only got him at 4 stars and he is indispensable. Usually in the 150-100 range for the arena and hope to move up slowly as I get him higher. Love my RG and little ewoks!

  6. Super toon worth every energy point and piece of gear, will take the weight off any squishy toon. Only thing I found is assist get past…darn you CP

  7. Kyle Buckingham

Defiantly a hidden gem. just got him to 4star level 7 gear and now I know the elite players line up. my rank is 300 and I haven’t spent a dime on the game, just a lot of time. Royal guard stuns 80% of the time which is great.

  8. Glad to see RedGuy is getting at last some attention. Another sideup I forgot to mention…

+ Glass Cannons like Rey or IG-88 now can be brought in to raise hell with RG.

+Now, really, I want to see Kir Kanos in this game. Come on!

    0
    • IG88 is a glass cannon. I would not consider Rey one as much. Her foresight is unreal.

RG is worth all the time you put into him 100x over. The stuns are unreal and the defense up is a bonus. I use him with Phasma lead and he is also an assist magnet. You’ll keep at least 1 toon stunned and usually 2 and sometimes 3 at a time w/ RG and Phasma lead.

      0
      • Rey is a glass cannon, hits like a truck, dies in a blink. IG-88 is as fragile as her, it mightn’t have her protection but it hits better, really nice AoE.

        0
        • are you insane? rey hits much harder, and foresight makes her a bitch to deal with on top of her insane speed.

          0
          • What? I’ve never seen her base attack over the 10k, do you? IG-88 well ranked is about 12k. Rey might catch the 20k but 88 gives you a funny 10k AoE, heal immunity, ability block, dmg over time to increase his damage. Who’s insane buddy?

  9. This guy is awesome!

    5
  10. This guy is so gay! Dooku (L), RG, Rey, QGJ, GS, this is the team that is almost impossible to beat (unless you have the same line-up). And Top 5 players in my server use that line-up (sometimes Lumi or Daka subs QGJ).

I myself always finish between 50 – 5. I reached rank 1 only once, due to that line-up the top 5 enemies have. My line-up is Dooku (L), Daka, GS, Phasma, Opress (or Assajj). I am a veteran yet f2p player, so getting RG will take ages.

I cant complain enough as I’m f2p, but seriously EA, you guys need to learn how to make things balance in this game.

    0
    • Daka seems marginalized against that kind of lineup. Try getting more control in your squad.

      How about a dooku(l), GS/Oppress, Phasma, Assajj, ST-Han/Poe.

Phasma & Poe/Han to move the turn meters. Poe/Han to redirect attacks even for a short time. Dooku to give evade. GS/Oppress for burst damage when you need it.

      0
      • Assajj is your weak link there but her dispel will be very helpful plus it heals her if she can survive.

        0
      • I was thinking about Han too. I am still working on him though as I chose to pick Oppress and Asajj first. Han would solve my problem against Dooku-RG teams :)

        0
  11. How do I see people with this guy with level 9 gear?
the “Mk 9 Neuro-Saav Electrobinoculars Salvage” item doesn’t even exist in the game for me, is this a bug or am i just drunk?

    0
  12. The New Meta: RG + Rey/FOTP + any healer.
Unless you have at least the same 3 in your lineup, you will lose. Glass cannon gets to go at least once with the safety of the RG and can still one-shot at least 1/3rd of the maxed out characters. A focused assault on her will trigger the RG, and then the healer wipes all damage from glass cannon and the RG, allowing for a second and third kill. Repeat the pain cycle if you trigger the RG again.

Your best shot is to target RG first and hope glass cannon doesn’t one-shot a character in the 1-2 rounds it takes to bring him down, unless healer pops a heal (then you’re still screwed any way you cut it).

    5
    • Yup. Got trashed by that lineup + Dooku lead. if you can’t hit anyone, you can’t do any damage. Gonna be a hard lineup to crack

      0
    • I take down those squads with QGJ as he will “un-taunt RG”. I’m not saying it’s easy and if both RG and Rey are maxed out it will definitely not succeed every time, but it’s not super hard either.

      0
      • well you can un-taunt RG, but the problem if you don’t beat him first is that he will keep stunning your team. And you know what, you can un-taunt him, but he can still taunt every time cuz it auto kicks in. Not to mention his superior health, you can imagine how gay this guy really is.

        0
      • @ML
I’ll contradict my first statement now. I agree: An “untaunter” like QGJ helps to pick off the glass cannon in the 2nd round if he can stick the purge on RG, which has varied results. I’ve developed a counter team that helps keep me in the top 5 against this new flavor of meta (good against opponents up to 3K power above my own team) but it’s very tactical and is difficult to defend:

QGJ(L), Phasma, Lumi, ST-Han, and Yoda. All crucial against the Dooku, RG, Glass cannon, healer lineup. The top teams right now have both Rey and FOTP and I’ve successfully beat them every time I attempted now.

That being said, my team can’t hold a position for very long as it’s highly tactical and others can roll right thru them when it’s comp-controlled.

I’m noticing in general the RG is for players still stuck on the one-shot burst damage squad type of strategy. They use the RG as cover now to get their most meaningful strikes in before you can get past him. Pretty much any strategy that extends the battle past the 1-2 rounds gets you a win. Move first and make it count with evasion/offense down/taunt/ability block/speed down.

When against the RG: Don’t always fight to make a kill in the first round and outdps them; they probably have you beat in that category. Just try to increase your squad’s survivability and shut them down slowly. My battles last anywhere from 3 to 4 minutes now and are very tactical (vs the < 1 minute "first move, atomic bomb squads" pre-balance patch).

        Good luck out there.

  13. Ok, here we go:

    – Obviously, since his attack is so looow. Don’t count on him for a finishing blow. On the other hand…

+ He can raise the defenses of the squad and heal himself authomatically, if only at a slow rate. Nothing Barris or Luminara can’t fix.

+ He hits often and adds a very nice Stun. Pair him up with Daka/Phasma, and Sidious won’t give you a headache again.

+ His star ability, Taunt, is authomatic as well! Dooku won’t obliterate your squad before you can raise a finger. If you add Chewie to the team as well, your defenses will be simply le-gen-dary.

+He looks awesome in red, if only not as much as Kir Kanos.

Hell, this guy was chosen as a bodyguard by the very Emperor himself! Give him a try! Only 4-5 stars and he can play in the major leagues ;-p

  14. Seems a recent rebalance has nerfed one of his most useful skills – his stun is now only at 60%.
Still useful, but you can really feel the loss – Mace Windu is so much harder to kill now in his related challenge :(

Edit: guess I’m half right – he still has 80%, but only after upgrading to level 5. Could have sworn it was initially 80 though, or at least it felt that way…

  15. So I was just wondering about this room casually. A taunt that auto kicks in? This could be valuable. Then I visit this website and see a main video with supposed “pro tips” using him. I have no experience with this toon but I was intrigued enough to comment

    5
  16. So useful in GW when you get one slightly low health guy that keeps getting focused down no matter what you do. Also slows down gameplay to let your healers get their health and cooldowns back on track.

  17. I hated Poe and everybody in my server farmed him, now EA improved Guard and guess what? They are farming him now…

This is not the first time, and this will happen in the future. EA will find the most useless toon in the game and make him(her) strong enough to make players farming (spending money).
My advice is to farm every toon you can, it’s too hard to predict how they will update the game.

    5
  18. pair him with luminara and OD and he is a beast that never dies

    5
  19. Have RG at 7* gear VIII lvl 70 and he permanently replaced Poe as my PvP Arena tank. He’s the reason I can now snipe No.1 at my server (who also happens to have RG but fully maxed out) and can safely remain no.10 without playing the whole day.

Here’s breakdown of why he is better than Poe:
    – Taunt: automatically kicks in, with current arena meta and emphasis on speed and damage, that’s normally after the attack from first enemy toon. Poe taunts after 3-4 enemy toons moved by which time you’ve lost at least one of your toons.
    – Stun: absolutely love it and is his second best ability. At 80% chance you’re all but guaranteed to make the enemy unit you least want to make his next move to skip his turn. Saved me lots of times.
    – HP: 30% higher than Poe.
    – Tenacity: slightly higher than Poe but no self heal if negative buff.
    – self heal: at 4% or 700 hp units, too low to make a difference so don’t spend ability mat 3
    – easy to gear. The drawback is he’s not easily farmable for F2P (sorry!) but he seemed to be perfectly arena-grade at 5* too.
    – Ability mat 3 usage: doesn’t require maxing out skills. I’ve only spent mat3 on upgrading his basic to Lvl 5 (80%) others don’t need to.

Strongly recommend for people who are looking for post-Poe tank and to those who have him at or about 5* and are hesitant if worth investing. Just taking him against Mace Windu challenge is fun due to his non-stop stuns on poor Mace :)

4.5/5. Not OP but currently the best tank money could buy

    5
    • What is your technic to farm his shards please ? I spend a lot of energy on the 1D hard luminous battle but never 1 shard ! :*-(

      4
      • Got all his shards from chromium. At the time, I he was useless and I was chasing other toons (Leia, Old Ben and QGJ). As I said he’s hard to get to 7* for F2P, but even at 4-5* he’s OK for Arena.

Shard drop rate is ~33%, so keep trying. If you can get Dark Side level 5 missions, it would make it faster.
I can only assume you’re new and not level 70 player yet. In that case, there are other decent alternative tanks: Poe, ST Han Solo and even Chewie will do the work just fine at that level.

My RG review above was for top end level.

        0
    • The self heal is worth it because it also comes with 15% turn meter gain. They take affect every time an ally takes damage. Can lead to extra stuns and speed downs. I find it useful.

      4
  20. Have him at 7* bringing him to gear level 9, auto taunt is absolutely great if you have low health toons which need to be healed, he just stops the enemy kills taunting, after an upgrade he is an absolute must to hold in the Arena.

    5
  21. With the new stun ability I plan on bringing him up a star or two and a few more levels. Believe he can actually be useful now, at least in GW.

    0
  22. does anyone have him at 5 stars, able to tell me his health after the update

    0
  23. He received a huge buff on Feb. 23rd 2016. Way more useful now in GW and campaign, but still not an arena character due to low damage and reactive taunt which is likely to come too late in that setting.

    4
    • Royal guard’s ‘reactive taunt’ is exactly why he is so useful now, but you wont see it unless you are in rank 400 squad arena or higher where speed matters, and people have higher damage scaling over health scaling. Which means if you have a Chewy tank, he is so slow that you can’t get off a chewy taunt before one of your toons are already dead before chewy hits his turn. Thats why Royal fuard’s taunt is a Auto-taunt that triggers out of his turnwhich is why he is so good.

      0
    • His reactive taunt is a must at high tier arena – he is what saves your big hitters from getting taken out before the tank can act

      5
  24. Finally another porpose for me. Thanks

    0
  25. Update skill make him very very usefull

    5
  26. Finally a worthy tank. (Something I was hoping Jedi Guardian would fill similarly) This guy just got reaaaally good. Sure fire taunt, good skills, a stun with a slow, really tanky. Update gave the best tank that will work on any composition.

    5
    • Yikes!
This would make him one of the most AI friendly toon. Imagine a defensive team with him and Poe + healer + 2 DPS.

While his damage is still low, he has 80% stun chance. Just tried him out in Mace challenge, non-stop stuns are quite fun.

      0
  27. fun story: I had this guy in a GW battle with snowtrooper and a stormtrooper (all lvl 41-43, 3* or less, no higher than gear 4) against a lvl 48 team. had stormtrooper taunt, and every time he got hit, the royal guard got the next turn. I lost the battle, but was surprised at how many turns this guy generated.

    0
    • Dual Tanks:

This does work against the AI. Instead of them only focusing on RG, they’ll split attacks between the two tanks. RG gets extra heals and turn meter.

I haven’t tried it yet in top tiers of arena, so not sure if its worth losing the DPS or healer slot.

I’ve got him at 4* gear 8+. I’ve been using him in arena since the update even when he was 4* level 50 against much higher levels since I had a low Poe.

      4
  28. I might be being dumb, but I’m focusing on him, and favouring him and the snowtrooper to a ridiculous degree, and it’s paying off nicely. I’m quite new, so I don’t have many characters, but I can’t even count the amount of times the ridiculous health I’ve given him, and his Imperial Phalanx ability’s Def buff has saved my skin. Granted, his attack sucks, but I’d say he is quite worth the hassle!

    0
  29. Summary: Tank that only cool thing it has is his clothes. Sucks slightly less when with Empire toons.

    Pros:
    – Great health, among the best of the game
    – When you get lucky, you may reduce a lot the turn meter of the enemy hit by him
    – Special adds armor for 3 turns

    Cons:
    – Damage is VERY disappointing
    – Very poor armor for a Tank
    – Taunt is unreliable
    – Farming for shards is bellow par (and who would be crazy enough to waste time to farm for him anyway?)

    1
  30. I find that he has a lot of health but does basically no damage. So unless you don’t have a tank in your team and you have a lot of attackers than you can consider the Royal guard.

    0
  31. I find him to be very useful in GF since the rules changed.

    4
  32. [FTB] Mega Rainbow

I think with an all empire team with Grand Moff Tarkin’s leader ability this champ with his turn meter gains and knock downs he could be awesome at keeping the other team for attacking. He gains turn meter when other empire allies are damaged which is why he doesn’t taunt all the time. You want everyone else to be hit so he gains turn meter then slows down the enemy more but he will take the taunt if his team really needs him to. Mine is only two star and way below level of all my others but I think with him and Storm Trooper as the tanks, Grand Moff leader, Vader and Snow Trooper attackers this team could kick ass so long as they don’t need to heal. Vader’s lightsaber throw would feed off Grand Moff’s effects, Royal guard would gain speed from Stormtrooper’s taunt, and Snow trooper’s basic attack causes more effects.
    ^^ Squad Goals ^^

    5
    • Have him at 7*, epic gear. He is not an arena team member by any stretch, but damn is he a great team member for dark side battles.

His defense up ability and taunt compliments the survival of my Night Sisters team dramatically:
      Old Daka (Leader +def/health)
      Talia
      Asaji Ventress
      Nightsisters Initiate
      Royal Guard

Dark Side only has 2 healers atm. Since u will run Daka and Talia anyways, you may as well capitalize on them.

  33. Currently, I only have a 2-star version of this guy, so it’s entirely possible he gets better at higher star levels, but right now I feel he’s not very useful. My main gripe with him is that he has no reliable taunt. You eventually get a 40% chance of him taunting when an ally falls below 30% health, but I really feel like he needs a better taunt to be truly effective. He has a lot of health, making him a great tank, but what use is a tank without a reliable taunt? Everyone else dies around him and you’re left with a character who takes a long time to kill, but who has a very weak offense. I only find myself using him in the tank challenge against Mace Windu for now.

    3
    • I felt the same way and they must have agreed with us both as two months after your post they made it a mandatory taunt whenever an ally goes below 50%.
